Pullen pulls off a storming win at the 21st Perranporth Extreme Surf Triathlon
Voted time and time again one of the UK’s best small triathlons, the 21st Perranporth Extreme Surf Triathlon was held on Sunday with a massive crowd watching the action. As one competition put it “this Triathlon is just such a beautiful one to do”, and this year it once again blessed with fine warm sunshine, blue skies and no wind. The 250 entrants charged on mass into a calm and pretty flat sea making for a fairer swim leg of the race for everyone involved. The competitors, both men and women ranging in age from 16 years to over 60 included local county favourite Matt Pullen and Devon’s Helen Parkinson and saw the return of world class elite triathletes Harry Wiltshire and Sam Herridge who obviously enjoyed the challenge last year.
The 1km sea swim which was described by local entrants as one of the toughest they had done for a while saw Junior Heffernan IRL of Plymouth Tri lead the pack in a time of 00:19:06 . Following her last years success and back for more, the first woman out of the swim was again Channel Islander Sam Herridge, 2006 Commonwealth Games competitor in a time of 00:20:27.
The hardcore and hilly 38 km cycle which takes competitors up the steep St George's Hill out of Perranporth, over to Goonbell, then to Chiverton and back twice, saw Heffernan still leading. However local Matt Pullen pulled off a fantastic race, building all the way. Third after the swim, moving to second after the cycle leg, Pullen turned up the pace for the final gruelling 7.5km beach run. The run to Penhale Corner which goes up and over the steep Highcliff towards Perran Sands and down to the corner then back along the sand, finished on the inner green in the village in front of a very large crowd of spectators.
Matt Pullen won in total time of 01:51:56 with Junior Heffernan IRL second this year 01:52:43. Harry Wiltshire was third in a time of 01:53:01. Charles Pennington and Thomas Davey took 4th and 5th positions. The Women’s race saw Cycle Logic’s Sam Herridge first in 02:05:46, 12th overall, 14 places up on her last years overall position. Helen Parkinson came in second place in a time of 02:08:47 and Jessica Taylor third with 02:12:20. Hefferman won the Junior Men’s race, and Perranporth SLSC’s Natasha Diment won the Junior Girls event. The team event was won by the Cycle Logic team.
The presentation was hosted by the Ponsmere Hotel and winners received prizes from sponsors Cycle Logic of Helston and SNUGG wetsuits, Newquay. Hot Rocket, Perranporth, Thule, The Ponsmere Hotel, Pure Blue and the Watering Hole were the other main sponsors of the event hosted by Perranporth Surf Life Saving Club. Many thanks to all of the town Sponsors, the RNLI, Chris Law, Surf club members and local people who made the 21st Perranporth Triathlon once again a roaring success.
